Preserving thatching heritage – one roof, one story, one generation at a time.

What are we looking for?

TækkeSelv is looking for suitable thatched roofs in South-West Fyn, primarily in and around Haarby, Jordløse, Flemløse, Ebberup, Glamsbjerg, Assens, Tommerup, Brobyværk and Faldsled that need repairs and maintainance or a ridge replacement (fynsk style). Roofs located slightly outside these areas may also be considered, depending on the project’s suitability and practical logistics.

These projects give participants the opportunity to learn traditional thatching techniques on real buildings while helping homeowners maintain and preserve existing thatched roofs

Requirements for suitable projects
To ensure safety and a good learning environment, the roof should:
✓ have a sound construction
✓ be safe to work on
✓ allow access for scaffolding or safe working conditions
✓ be suitable for the type of work required

How does it work

Your roof becomes a practical learning location for participants attending a TækkeSelv workshop.
Participants carry out the work while receiving continuous
instruction and supervision.
The focus is:
learning correct techniques;
understanding traditional craftsmanship;
gaining practical experience.

This is a practical workshop – not a standard roofing service
The work is performed as part of an educational workshop and
there are no labour costs for home owners. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that a specific amount of work will be completed during a workshop day, as progress depends on factors such as the number and experience of participants, weather conditions, and the time required for teaching and supervision.

All submitted thatched roofs will become part of our pool of potential learning projects. When a roof is suitable for an upcoming course, we will contact the homeowner directly. We therefore cannot promise that every submitted roof will be selected.”

The priority is always correct workmanship and learning the techniques properly. If a project is not completed during one workshop, it may be continued during a future workshop.

Why are we doing this

Thatched roofs are an important part of our cultural heritage. For generations, skilled craftsmen have used natural materials and traditional techniques to create buildings that belong to the landscape and local history.

With TækkeSelv, our goal is to help preserve this knowledge and make sure that traditional thatching skills are passed on to future generations.
By combining education with real practical projects, we want to:

Keep traditional craftsmanship alive
Inspire more people to understand and appreciate thatched buildings
Support the maintenance and preservation of existing thatched roofs
Support people who need some help with their thatched roof
